This Cochrane systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of various antifungal medications for treating newborns with suspected or confirmed invasive fungal infection. Six studies involving a total of 229 newborns were included, comparing different antifungal agents including amphotericin B, fluconazole, micafungin, and caspofungin. The results showed very low certainty of evidence for all compared outcomes including mortality, adverse effects, and length of hospital stay. The studies had significant methodological limitations including unblinded design and small sample sizes. Researchers were unable to draw clear conclusions about the superiority of any antifungal medication over others. Further high-quality studies are needed to determine optimal antifungal therapy in newborns.
